Did Arctic Warming Sink The Titanic?

Regular readers know that I like to keep an eye on the ebb and flow (or maybe I should say floe) of Arctic sea ice, an interest not widely shared among other financial advisers. But this week's centenary of the R.M.S. Titanic disaster has, for once, drawn attention to the far north's floating ice apart from the subject of climate change.

Or maybe not.

Here is an excerpt from a New York Times report published on May 5, 1912, a few weeks after Titanic went down:

"An unprecedentedly warm Winter in the entire arctic is believed to be the cause of the vast number of icebergs adrift in the North Atlantic Ocean during the present season and for the low latitudes which many of them have reached. Navigators and scientists of the Hydrographic Office and the Revenue Cutter Service in Washington have theories tending to prove that an unusually heavy snowfall in Greenland, where all icebergs are formed, in the Winter of 1910-11 was followed by an unusually hot Summer, and by a very mild Winter in 1911-12, these conditions resulting in the creation of an enormously large crop of icebergs from the West Greenland glaciers, and of floe, or field ice. Unusual northerly and northwesterly winds have blown these bergs far to the southward."

The article describes summer weather that brought temperatures as high as 94 degrees Fahrenheit to Greenland the previous year. This was followed by a winter that produced severe conditions on the East Coast of the United States, but very mild weather in Labrador and Greenland, at least according to the scanty data of the period.

"Information has just been received...from Donald R. McMillan, who was with Peary on his arctic dash, and who is now in northern Labrador, preparatory to an exploration trip into the far North," The Times reported. "He states that the past Winter has been an unusually mild one in the entire arctic, causing much more ice than usual to break up and float southward with the Labrador current. He said...that he expected to find areas in the arctic free from ice which have not been clear in more than a quarter of a century. What caused this unusually mild Winter? There is no scientific data on this point at hand."

The report goes on to mention that Alaska "reported during the past Winter the mildest weather ever known there at that season." The descriptions suggest a weather pattern similar to what occurred in the winter of 2009-10, when El Nino brought a mild winter to Alaska, while a deeply negative North Atlantic Oscillation produced severe cold and heavy snow over the U.S. East Coast even as temperatures in Labrador and Greenland were exceptionally mild. Scientists a century ago knew nothing about the NAO; El Nino was not known to affect conditions beyond the west coast of South America, where fishermen had long been aware of the occasional odd warming of the water that drove their prey away while bringing flooding rains to nearby deserts.

Today's satellites and other communications advances allow us to see and measure conditions over far more of the globe than could our forebears a century ago, and scientific study and computer modeling have given us a better knowledge of how weather and climate operate. But these two advances have not moved in lockstep. What we can see and measure has increased faster than what we can explain and predict.

The National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo., reported recently that Arctic sea ice reached its maximum extent for the season on March 18, at 5.88 million square miles. This was the highest figure in the past nine years, though still well below the average that was established during the first 21 years of satellite measurements, between 1979 and 2000.

Most climate averages are based on 30-year record periods. The NSIDC's baseline measurements cover a shorter period, which makes it more difficult to know how much natural variability there is in the ice cover of the northern seas over longer stretches of time. What we know for certain is what we can see via satellite: The ice fields declined steadily in the 1980s, the 1990s, and the first part of the 2000s, and the declines have been greater in summer than in winter. Since then, the trend has not been clear. Last summer's minimum was the second-lowest yet recorded, but was not quite as small as the ice cap measured in 2007.

People tend to see in these numbers what they expect to see. Those who believe climate change will rapidly deplete the Arctic's ice floes see no contradiction in the fact that the observations in recent years seem to have stabilized; some models have reportedly predicted that the ice will decrease in more of a stair-step pattern than a linear one. Those who believe that some dire forecasts have veered into hyperbole, if not fantasy, including Al Gore's 2009 pronouncement that summer ice would be gone in less than a decade, wonder: If everyone is so certain that the ice is disappearing, why the need to spin contrary data?

The NSIDC reports fall into the pro-spinning camp. When ice was reaching new lows, those lows were loudly trumpeted. When the lows stopped coming, the emphasis shifted - first to the reduction in multi-year ice (a certainty, since the process of recovering from low points would have to begin with first-year ice), or to reported reductions in ice thickness (also a function of the age of the ice), or to variations in wind patterns spreading the ice over larger areas (though the wind patterns in the 21-year baseline period are not analyzed for comparative purposes).

Its most recent reports fit the pattern. Noting that this year's maximum was the ninth-lowest in the satellite record, the NSIDC added, "Including this year, the nine years from 2004 to 2012 are the nine lowest maximums in the satellite record." While true, this reflects the downward trend that occurred between 1979 and 2004; all it says about the subsequent period is that the ice has not thus far recovered to pre-2004 levels. The NSIDC could have said, with equal accuracy and equally little relevance, that the past 33 years have been the 33 lowest years in the satellite record, which is exactly 33 years long.

Was the Arctic sea ice pack larger or smaller in 1979 than in 1912, when Titanic sailed? Or than in 1958, when the American nuclear submarine Nautilus first traversed the North Pole beneath the ice cap? We really don't know. Has the ice pack ever been as small as it presently is before recovering? We don't know that, either.

None of this is to deny that the Arctic's measured temperatures or ice extent have changed over time, or that they are likely to change in the future. But when we extrapolate predictions from data that is severely limited both in time and in geographic extent, the margin for error is very high.

Dangerous ice still floats down on the Labrador Current, and ships still traverse the North Atlantic in springtime, yet we may never hear of another major shipping accident due to an iceberg. We can see things so well that such tragedies need never happen again. What we can see and what we can predict, however, are not the same.

Vishu Festival

Malayalees all over the world celebrate the Vishu as their new year. Since the mother tongue of the Kerala people is Malayalam, other people call them malayalees. This celebration is as per Malayalam calendar and usually falls on 14th or 15th of April.  Some other Indian states also celebrate the same day as their new year. For Example Tamil Nadu celebrates the same day as Tamil New Year and Bengalis celebrate the day as Bengali New Year.

Traditions:  Kerala astrologers are calculating Malayalam astrology as per rasi, which is calculated according to the position of sun related to the earth in different months. They will divide each year into different rasi as per sun's position. As per this calculation, sun enters into medam rasi by crossing equator on the 1st day of Medam month of regional Malayalam Calendar. Malayalees consider this day as New Year and celebrate it as vishu.  It is important to note that this is not the first day of the Malayalam calendar. Malayalam calendar begins from chingam (August 14th or 15th). Since Hindus are strong believers of Astrology, astrologers will do lot of predictions for the coming year. All Malayalam newspapers will publish these  predictions for each person as per their birth-dates and birth star. This prediction, which is prepared by leading astrologers of Kerala, is known as vishu phalam (predictions).

Vishu Celebrations:  This festival celebrations usually start with Vishu kani. After the kani, there will be Fire crackers, kaineettam and sadhya. People of most other Indian states use firecrackers for Diwali. However, in Kerala, main use of firecrackers is for this festival to welcome the New Year.  Lot of temporary firecracker stalls will be setup along the side of road.

Vishu Kani:  Kani is the most important part for this festival. People believe that seeing kani, at the dawn of this day will bring luck and prosperity for the next year. Kani is normally set in a circular metal plate or in circular brass vessel known as uruli.

Hindus believe that whatever one see first in the morning will decide the luck for that day and call it as kani. The same way they believe that, the New Year should start with seeing good and lucky objects, to bring luck and prosperity for the whole year. Senior lady of the house will set kani on the preceding night, so that she can also see kani at the early morning of the day.  The Vishu kani is made with auspicious items such as Rice, coconut, gold , money, new cloth, areca nut, betel leaves, fruits, vegetables like mangoes, yellow cucumber, and jack-fruit, along with the konna pove (Indian Laburnum). The entire above item will be set in the circular plate or in a uruli. Behind the kani plate, they will keep a mirror and a statue of garlanded Lord Krishna. She will also keep a Hindu prayer lamp called Nilavilakku, at the side of kani.

Kani Kanal:- In the early morning, senior lady of the house will get up and go directly to the room where she has kept the vishu kani. She will ignite the lamp Nilavilaku to see kani. Then she will take bath and will wake the other members of the house one by one by closing their eyes with her hands. She will guide them to the room where she has set the kani. Then she will remove her hands from their eyes so that they can see kani as the first thing on the morning. She will repeat this with every members of the house including kids. This tradition is kani kanal (Seeing Kani). After kani kanal all the kids and other junior members of house will get a small donation from their father, which is known as the vishu kaineettam. After kani kanal people will start bursting different firecrackers in front of the house.

Vishu sadhya:-  Vishu sadhya is the lunch of the day and it is served in the afternoon. In southern part of Kerala. This is a traditional pure vegetarian lunch served in banana leaf, where as in northern Kerala (Malabar area) it is a special non-vegetarian lunch prepared with fish and goat meat served in Banana leaf.

Vishu greetings:-Sending greeting cards to your friends and relatives for vishu has become a tradition for Malayalees. Lot of kerala theme cards is available for this festival, with various subjects like vallam kali (Boat race), katha kali, and sceneries from various parts of Kerala. Lot of online greeting card websites are also has lot of special greetings in their collection.

Vishu - Festival of Kerala

Vishu is a New Year festival celebrated in the state of Kerala. This festival is celebrated with joy and mirth. This is the first day of Malayalese month of Medam. Vishu generally falls on April 14 of the Gregorian calendar. On the same day Punjab celebrates Baisakhi, Tamil Nadu celebrates Puthandu, Assam celebrates Ronagali Bihu and Bengal celebrates Naba Barsha. "Vishu" in Sanskrit means "equal". Thus Vishu denotes one of the equinox days.

The most important event in Vishu is the Vishukkani and is the first to be seen on the Vishu day. The festival is marked with offerings to the divine called Vishukkani. The offerings consists of a traditional arrangement in the puja room of auspicious articles like rice, linen, cucumber, betal leaves, metal mirror, holy text and coins in a bell metal vessel called uruli. Alongside a lighted bell metal lamp called "nilavilkku" is also placed. The arrangement is done by the women of the house on the previous night. The elder member of the house wakes up with is eyes closed and the first thing he sees in the morning is the Vishukkani. Later all members of the house are brought to the puja room with their eyes closed and they too see the Vishukkani. The elder member gives tokens of money to the children. This token is called "Vishukkaineetam" and is usually in the form of coins. Children wear new clothes on this day. It is believed that children will be blessed with prosperity in the future.

The Chemistry of Fireworks Colors

Chemistry is a fascinating subject and is happening around us every day. When you understand how chemistry is involved in everyday life you will have a deeper understanding of all the processes that occur around you. We've all seen fireworks in lovely colors and effects but have you ever stopped to think how those wonderful colors are produced? To understand the chemistry of fireworks colors you will need knowledge of the structure of atoms and how electrons behave when they absorb energy. Are you ready to learn about how the colors are produced when a firework is ignited?

The chemistry of fireworks colors

Let's start with the basic structure of the atom. Every atom has a nucleus that contains protons which are positively charged with negatively charged electrons in orbitals around the nucleus. The number of protons is equal to the number of electrons so that the atom overall is neutral. Now electrons will be in the lowest energy orbital that is possible to be stable. This will be the orbital closest to the nucleus. Let's take lithium as an example. Lithium is the third element in the periodic table and has three protons and three electrons. Two electrons are in an orbital close to the nucleus. This orbital can only hold two electrons as it is has a small radius. So the third electron goes in an orbital a bit farther away from the nucleus. We say that lithium has an electronic configuration of 2,1. An electronic configuration is just a way of saying where the electrons are!

Now there are lots more orbitals further away from the nucleus that are empty in the case of lithium. They are higher in energy as they are further from the pull of the nucleus so an electron would need more energy to stay in those orbitals. If we give that one lone electron some energy, for instance in the form of heat, then it can jump from it's orbital into a higher orbital. Once there it is unstable and falls back to its original starting point. However, when it falls back it has to lose that extra energy and it does this in the form of light. The light is emitted and the wavelength of the light depends on the difference between the energies of the starting and finishing orbitals. These will be different for different metals so the wavelength of the light will be different. For lithium the main transition that occurs emits light that is red. Other metals emit light as shown below.

Sodium -------- yellow/orange

Potassium -------- lilac

Calcium -------- brick red

Barium -------- light green

Copper -------- blues

So we can use metals in fireworks that, when they absorb energy from the burning charcoal, emit light of different colors. Other metals that can be added are magnesium which emits a brilliant white light, and aluminum and titanium which also produce white light and increase the temperature at which the firework burns.

So now, when you see a fireworks display you will know how those colors are produced. Knowing the science behind everyday events doesn't spoil the enjoyment but increases it. How much more fascinating to know exactly what is happening and still be able to be in awe at the wonderful events that happen around us everyday.

Body Dragon Tattoos

Dragon Tattoo Art - Finding Printable Designs For Your Dragon Tattoos
By Peter Brat

Dragon tattoo art has been one of the most sought after designs especially among male tat enthusiasts. The creature, although mythical and non-existent has strong symbolism attached to it, not to mention the artistic appeal it has when inked on one's body.

Dragon tattoos can represent two different meanings depending on how they are portrayed. In the West, they are regarded as an evil and mean winged creature who breathes fire and guards caves with golds and jewels. Those who want to get these treasures have to slay the dragon first. In this case, dragon tattoos can mean fearless, power, courage and strong will.

The other symbolism of dragon tattoo art is good luck, fortune and wisdom as how they are look upon in the East. In China, they are the main symbol during the celebration of Chinese New Year as they are believed to bring prosperity, benevolence and good will. As a tattoo design, they can mean intelligence, protection, balance and harmony.

Dragon tattoo designs are very adaptable and flexible body art and looks great on large areas of the body such as the arm, rib cage, chest, back and shoulder blade. They can be seen inked in colors such as red and green while others opt for the plain black ink with some tribal touch. They can be portrayed as terrifying or monster-like, charming and kind and even small and innocent. It all depends on what kind of message the person sporting the tattoo wants to portray.
