Shah showed interest in an acting career from his childhood. He graduated from the National School of Drama in 1973 and enrolled in the Film and Television Institute of India the same year.
After watching Geoffrey Kendall's theatre group, Shakespeareana perform at his school, Naseeruddin Shah was very impressed with the art of acting. He joined the Pune Film Institute and in 1975, Shyam Benegal offered him 'Nishaant'. His debut film was followed by several supporting roles in Shyam Benegal's films. His major break through came with 'Junoon' in 1979 where he played the character of a hotheaded revolutionary and with 'Aakrosh' as the activist lawyer. His subsequent films, 'Masoom', 'Khandhan', 'Paar', 'Katha', `Sparsh` and 'Pestonjee' established him as an actor par excellence.
However his stint with commercial cinema in films like 'Tridev', 'Mohra', and 'Najayaz' did not make much demand on his talent. And today, Naseeruddin Shah is busy doing theatre and also teaching at acting workshops. His recent performance in `Sarfarosh` as a muslim with divided loyality has come in for a lot of praise.
His wife Ratna Pathak Shah and daughter Heeba Manara Shah have also graduated from the National School of Drama (1981 and 1999 batches respectively).
He retained his Muslim name and did not adapt a Hindu screen name (which was done by some popular actors, most notably Dilip Kumar) owing to a promise he made his father [citation needed].
Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah , brother of Naseeruddin Shah was appointed the Deputy Chief of Army Staff , Indian Army on Oct 1st 2006.
