The Florida native left Sin City with $3,000 in blackjack earnings and decided to make an immediate and dramatic change. “I was like, ‘I’m going to move to LA,’” she says today. “I remember thinking, ‘I’m going to take this $3,000 and make it happen.’”
Perry wanted to finally pursue in earnest her dream of becoming an actor. Fortunately for Perry, she had plenty of momentum in the other components of her career. After all, she was an in-demand dancer who graduated from the Latvian National Ballet Academy and had toured with Keri Hilson and P!nk. Her striking beauty and flawless physique had helped her become a red-hot model. She was the most downloaded “Hot College Girl” on the AT-and-T and Sprint networks in 2008 and 2009.
In her first few weeks in Los Angeles, Perry booked five gigs, including a speaking role on the acclaimed television show The Game and a spot in Afrojack’s “Take Over Control” video, which has more than 26 million views on YouTube.
Since then, Perry landed a role in Universal Picture’s hit film Pitch Perfect starring Anna Kendrick and Brittany Snow. The movie is up for a People’s Choice Award. Perry also has a recurring role in the Cinemax original series Banshee, a drama from Alan Ball, the creator of True Blood.
Born in Gainesville, Florida, Perry took a circuitous route to Hollywood. She and her family moved regularly because of her father’s work as a missionary. They settled in Latvia, where Perry became the first and only international student to graduate from the Latvian National Ballet Academy, the same school Mikhail Baryshnikov attended. She emerged as a tremendous dancer, a professional who toured Europe during her teenage years and became fluent in Russian before her parents relocated to the states.
Perry then enrolled at Florida State University, befriended Jenn Sterger and became a FSU Cowgirl. Sterger trained Perry and helped her develop her look. Perry was soon winning bikini contests and scoring prestigious modeling jobs, including the RIDGID Calendar and Matrix Energy Drink.
Simultaneously, Perry became infatuated with breakdancing. Even though she was a world-class ballet dancer, she didn’t know how to dance socially, much like Julia Stiles’ character in Save The Last Dance.
Once she became a proficient breakdancer, Perry was recruited in 2009 to join No Means Yes, a girl group signed to Ne-Yo’s label. Perry had the supermodel looks, the dancing ability and could sing. The group disbanded a year later when one of the girls left. But Perry’s time in the quartet provided her with the network to work as a dancer with some of music’s biggest names, including P!nk, Afrojack, Nelly, Usher, Jason Derulo, Ludicrous, Taio Cruz , Big Time Rush and Keri Hilson.
Perry’s move to Los Angeles also enhanced her modeling career. She was a Miller Lite Poster Girl for NASCAR in 2011, working extensively with Sprint Cup winner Brad Keselowski in 2012 doing on-site promotions at the races. She also earned the coveted job as the main Red Bull spokesmodel for its motocross division, a role she started in May 2012. She has also appeared on American Idol and I.C.I.R.U.S., among other television programs.
“I believe that being grateful is key to having a happy life,” Perry says. “Love unconditionally. We are living in a very broken world, so let’s have compassion for everyone and let’s try to open our mind to new things and understand why people are they way they are. We all come from different parts of the world, races, cultures and religions. We can all teach something to each other if we are open-minded and have loving hearts. Let’s make change with the man in the mirror and love one another to make a better universe.”
As for her professional goals, Perry would eventually like to star in a major motion picture as a superhero (she’s a comic fanatic) and win a fistful of Emmys for her own comedy show. She imagines taking home awards for acting and writing, and keeps her skills sharp as a regular at Groundlings, Improv Olympic and UCB (Upright Citizens Brigade).
Although some may say her dreams are ambitious, Perry believes they are also obtainable. “My dad told me my entire life that the sky is the limit for your dreams,” she says. “That’s why ‘The sky is the limit’ has always been my motto. I grew up with the American Dream that all things are possible and so I’ve lived my life that way. If you’re willing to dedicate everything to making it happen, then you can make it happen.”
And CJ Perry is well on her way.

When tackling provocative material, there is a fine line between drama and merely being seamy and soapy. And that's the line director Anne Fontaine ("Coco Before Chanel," "The Girl From Monaco") needs to balance in "Two Mothers" which brings together Naomi Watts and Robin Wright for a very unique story.Based on the novel by Doris Lessing and adapted by Christopher Hampton ("A Dangerous Method," "Atonement") the film centers on two best friends -- and moms -- whose world gets somewhat turned upside down when they start sleeping with each other's sons. It seems like the kind of problem that could only happen to beautiful people, living in a beautiful place with nothing but time and opportunity on their hands, but this new international trailer does show there is a bit more weight to the premise. Yet, it also just seems kind of salacious just for the sake of it.
Playing Sundance last month, response was muted at best, but you can judge for yourself when it opens in theaters later this summer.

Last week, model-slash-editor Anja Rubik drew battle lines between her new magazine, 25, which focuses on erotica from a women’s point of view, and the sex-obsessed French fashion tome Purple, which she contends is “more from a man’s point of view.” It seemed only fitting, then, at Purple’s annual Fashion Week dinner Tuesday night at Acme, followed by a dance party at the Top of the Standard, for the Cut to ask guests if they think that Rubik has a point. Is there enough erotica for women?Purple’s editor Olivier Zahm wrapped his arm around us while smoking inside and photographing and kissing basically every man and woman in the room. He said he thought 25 was a great idea, but objected to Rubik’s idea that his publication is male-oriented. “Okay, I’m the editor, so it’s maybe more for men, but I try to have sexual fluidity in Purple,” he said, pointing out that he’s had transgender models and guy-on-guy and girl-on-girl spreads. “I think that men are women and women are men. I don’t really believe in gender.”
If it were up to him, Zahm said, “I think the porn industry should be done by a woman.” Why? “Because it would be much more interesting.” He imagines the approach would be subtler, about the beauty of the body. “Because a sex magazine made by a woman is not made to masturbate. Well, maybe it’s made to masturbate, but it’s also made to dream. A woman likes to dream first, to be mentally stimulated. And men like to see.” Zahm’s good friend Glenn O’Brien, author of How to Be a Man, concurred. “I think women like stories and men like pictures. It’s funny, if you read interviews with the Playboy playmates they always say, ‘I like a guy with a sense of humor.’ And then if you ask a guy, he’ll say, ‘I like a woman with a big rack.’”
Among the women in the crowd, Cynthia Rowley contended that she gets plenty of erotica on Sunday nights. “The last Girls episode with Patrick Wilson, I said, ‘This is like female porn!’” she explained. “They’re having sex full on, but it’s in a way that is so sensitive and smart.” Rowley said the show makes her wish she’d taken more chances in her twenties and makes her want to be more experimental now. In bed, with her husband, gallerist Bill Powers? “I think so,” Rowley said coyly.

Five cringeworthy 1990s erotic thrillers
The coincidental conjunction of Time Out’s sex-themed issue, Valentine’s Day and an interview with ‘Colour of Night’ star Bruce Willis (what, you mean he’s made other movies?) naturally got us reminiscing about the heyday of the erotic thriller. In the late ’80s, the term was in no way pejorative. Thanks to classics like ‘Body Heat’, ‘Fatal Attraction’ and ‘Sea of Love’, the idea of a crafty crime flick with a spot of added sauciness actually made a lot of sense. But then, in 1992, Paul Verhoeven hove into view, ratcheting the whole thing up by several steaminess points and coming up with ‘Basic Instinct’. Thanks to a script that combined silliness, sleaziness and self-awareness in equal measure (not to mention rumoured sex-addict Michael Douglas’s high-end cardie collection and Sharon Stone’s… um… let’s go with ‘enthusiasm’), the film became a monumental smash. It wasn’t long before Hollywood was awash in aspirational shagging, celebrity nudity (male and female) and some jaw-droppingly ripe line readings. Here are 5 of the most memorably awful examples…Body of Evidence (1993)
The culprits: Director Uli Edel, stars Madonna and Willem Dafoe
For some reason, everyone in the early ’90s was falling over themselves for a glimpse of Madonna naked, despite the fact that it was as easy to come across as a sex shop in Soho. Here, she hooked up with the owner of the creepiest mouth in showbiz, Willem Dafoe, for a forgettable slab of seedy celluloid slice ‘n’ dice. Six Golden Raspberry nominations followed.
Juiciest line: ‘I fucked you, I fucked Andrew, I fucked Frank. That’s what I do; I fuck. And it made me $8 million!’
Dangerous Game (1993)
The culprits: Director Abel Ferrara, stars Madonna (again!) and Harvey Keitel
Also known as a battle of the nudists. Unrepentant bum-flasher Keitel and coffee-table princess Madonna were a match made in eroto-thrills hell in this godawful backstage exposé from a director who really should have known better. You’ll never look at a lit candle the same way again.
Juiciest line: ‘You want to know why I’m like this? Because I’ve seen you suck the cock of your girlfriend’s husband and not even bat an eye.’
Sliver (1993)
The culprits: Director Philip Noyce, star Sharon Stone and writer Joe Eszterhas
‘Basic Instinct’ alumni Stone and Eszterhas attempted to rekindle the flame with yet another tale of high-society sex ‘n’ death. The result is – somehow – stultifyingly dull, as Stone drags hunk-of-meat co-stars William Baldwin and Tom Berenger into a web of intrigue, deceit and serial masturbation. The Razzie judges had another field day…
Juiciest line: ‘You’ve been spending too much time with your vibrator?’
Colour of Night (1994)
The culprits: Director Richard Rush and stars Bruce Willis and Jane March
The indisputable nadir of the entire movement, ‘Colour of Night’ teams Willis – eager to piss away all the cache he’d earned with ‘Pulp Fiction’ – with strip-happy British actress March, the tabloid-crowned ‘Sinner from Pinner’. The result is a despicably hilarious trawl through all the genre’s worst excesses: sub-Hitchcock pop psychology, gender angst, beautifully designed offices and movie stars’ flabby bottoms.
Juiciest line: ‘You stick your dick in a barrel of barracudas once, maybe you won’t lose it. You leave it in there, it’s gonna get chewed off at the root.’
Jade (1995)
The culprits: Director William Friedkin, star David Caruso, writer Joe Eszterhas (again!)
Three years and a string of utter disasters in, the erotic thriller (which, by this point, was neither) was on its last legs when Eszterhas and Friedkin pumped out this wretched killer-thriller. The promising appearance of Linda Fiorentino – so good in the tangentially linked but infinitely superior ‘The Last Seduction’ – was undermined by the fact that the male lead was a pale, odd-looking ginger with a permanent sneer. The genre was dead, the fun was over, and the video shop bargain basement beckoned…
Juiciest line: ‘I do the fucking, I never get fucked!’

Paul Schrader's 'The Canyons' Gets Picked Up By IFC
The modern-day Los Angeles-set film -- written by Bret Easton Ellis -- stars Lohan and adult film star James Deen. Producer Braxton Pope led the DIY film’s extensive new media strategies which included crowdfunding and online casting.
The film will premiere day-and-date and on digital platforms in early summer in conjunction with a Special Presentation at the Film Society of Lincoln Center where "The Canyons" will be screened and followed by a conversation with Schrader and Kent Jones, Director of Programming of the New York Film Festival.
Schrader presented a Master Class on crowdsourcing and DIY production at last year's New York Film Festival and will return to expand upon the process of making the film in a post-screening discussion.
“This film is a wild ride through the psyche of Bret Easton Ellis courtesy of Paul Schrader. Lindsay Lohan is terrific as Tara and James Deen will be a big surprise for people," Jonathan Sehring, President of Sundance Selects/IFC Films, said. "We are thrilled that the filmmakers’ adventure in filmmaking 2.0 has brought them to our door.”
Schrader himself added: “I am delighted our film has found an enthusiastic home at IFC. We envisioned The Canyons as a multi-platform release from the beginning and no company knows that world better than IFC."
The deal for the film was negotiated by Arianna Bocco, Senior Vice President of Acquisitions and Productions for Sundance Selects/IFC Films with Alexis Garcia at WME Global on behalf of the filmmakers.
IFC Films is a sister label to IFC Midnight and Sundance Selects, and is owned and operated by AMC Networks Inc.

Thandie Newton has told how she was abused as a teenage actress on a casting couch.The 40-year-old British star said she was still scarred by a ‘horrific’ incident involving an unnamed male director when she was 18 and looking for her ‘big break’.
Miss Newton, now a mother of two and married to the film producer Oliver Parker, said she later found out the director involved had shown a video of her ordeal to others in showbusiness.
The Cambridge-educated actress, who has starred in films including Crash and Mission: Impossible II, has chosen to speak out about her abuse as part of an international campaign to end violence against women, One Billion Rising – the number who have been raped, beaten or abused.
Speaking to CNN International journalist Max Foster, she said: 'When I was a 16 year old fresh from boarding school going out in, you know the casting couch, I was definitely objectified to an extreme.
'The way I was made to feel. The way I was exploited and the kind of role and the kinds of things I was expected to do in auditions.’
Foster asked: ‘So you were abused as a 16-year-old?’ Miss Newton replied: ‘Yes.’
She goes on to explain, however, that at the time she didn’t know how to react because it was conducted in what she describes as a ‘professional environment’.
Referring to the incident that happened when she was 18, she continued: ‘It was a screen test.
‘There were two other people in the room – the director and the casting director, who was a woman.

‘The director asked me to sit with my legs apart – the camera was positioned where it could see up my skirt – to put my leg over the arm of the chair.
‘Before I started my dialogue, [I was told to] think about the character I was supposed to be having the dialogue with and how it felt to be made love to by this person.’ |

She was confused because it was a ‘professional environment’.
‘I was thinking “this is so strange, why would I need to do that?”’ she said. ‘But this is the director, there is the casting director, [it] must be normal. ‘I’m 18 years old, you know, and I’m thinking this is, obviously... I was in a protected... there were boundaries.’
Three years later, she discovered the video was being shown by the director to other showbusiness figures.
‘It turned out the director... used to show that video late at night to interested parties at his house – a video of me touching myself with a camera up my skirt,’ she said.
Miss Newton declined to name the director or say if she knew whether he was still in the business.
Now married to producer Oliver Parker, she said the coupl were accosted by a drunken British producer at a party in Cannes several years later who boasted of having been shown a video of her ordeal.
The actress was born in London to a Zimbabwean health care worker and her British husband and grew up in Cornwall. Her name means ‘beloved’ in Zulu.
She married English writer and director Oliver Parker in 1998. The couple have two daughters: Ripley, 12, and eight-year-old Nico.

It’s impractical, it’s bizarre, it’s almost certainly going to have your coworkers giving you nervous glances if they catch you looking at it.

The photo book is believed to have come about after the appearance of underwear-faced “superhero” Hentai Kamen, or “pervert mask”, himself a parody of long-time Japanese classics like Kamen Rider, Ultraman and Power Rangers. Whether this is a fetish that has existed for some time or whether the movie has spurred it, however, on is anyone’s guess.
Rather than simply appealing to consumers’ sense of humour, however, Kaopan offers page after page of shots of girls in school uniforms going about their day with a variety of underwear draped over their faces.

American media distorts view of sex, sexual norms

Welcome to The Flor-Ala’s new biweekly blog on sexuality and sexual health for UNA students. Over the course of the rest of the semester, I will explore normal and abnormal facets of the sex life of college students, identify causes and effects of the modern American’s sexual stimulation through the media and discuss the sexual reality of our generation.
I recently watched the French film “Sexual Chronicles of a French Family.” The film contained extremely realistic sex scenes and normal people with flaws. There were no enlarged penises and silicone breasts — just the typical skinny boy, middle-aged man and slightly overweight prostitute.
My roommate arrived halfway through the movie, and we were both surprised that we felt totally comfortable with watching this sex-drenched film together. Afterwards, we discussed how utterly normal the sex was. It was everyday, somewhat non-kinky, married people sex and inexperienced, barely developed teenager sex. Why didn’t we feel slightly dirty or guilty like after watching raunchy porn? Well, it was just normal sex.
On reviewing the French film, I realized the blatant (but natural) sex scenes surprised me because they are so rare in American film. It is common knowledge that American cinema is much more eager to depict violence rather than sexuality, but I have begun to wonder if this is detrimental to our society’s sexual health.
I am probably (definitely) not the most knowledgeable source on porn; however, I know it when I see it.
When I think of American porn, I picture male genitals that look more like weapons than reproductive organs and women who look like they walked straight out of “Tomb Raider.”
So, why has this grotesque depiction of sex become the object of our sexual fantasies? Why do ladies fantasize about men with a shoe size 15 and men expect women to be hairless like 9-year-olds?
I think it is possible that our lack of normal and healthy sex in the media is causing a weird, oversized, flawlessly waxed sex-monster to creep into our psyches as the norm.
To clarify, I do not have a vendetta against porn, but on the other hand, I don’t think kids should be overexposed to sex through the media. I would just like to explore the possibility that we have rejected normal sexual stimulation on our living room TVs in favor of abnormal sex on our laptops under the covers.

Todd Farmer Talks My Bloody Valentine 2, Halloween 3D, The Monkey's Paw, and More!

Now that Valentine’s Day has passed, this writer must ask: How many of you horror fans celebrated by watching My Bloody Valentine 3D, the wickedly fun 2009 remake of the 80s slasher classic?Given the nature of that film’s ending, have you ever wondered why a sequel has never materialized? To ring in this V-Day right, Dread caught up with MBV3D co-writer Todd Farmer to discuss the sequel-that-never-was.
Dread Central: My Bloody Valentine 3D opened over four years ago in early 2009, reportedly made on a budget of $15 million dollars. It went on to gross over $50 million domestically and over $100 million worldwide. That success, coupled with the sequel-friendly nature of the film’s conclusion, leads me to ask – where’s the sequel?!
Todd Farmer: I wish I knew! Patrick and I had a wonderful take. We pitched it a couple of weeks before MBV3D came out and everyone was excited. We were gonna bring the whole gang back, cast and crew. But... you know. It came down to ARRRGGGGGG. I don't know. We heard lots of reasons. We heard there were rights issues; then we heard there were internal conflicts... it went on and on, and in the end none of it really matters because a great many cosmic cogs just tumble and turn in just the right direction for a movie to get made... but it only takes one "no".
Dread Central: MBV3D director Patrick Lussier had previously spoken to Dread Central, mentioning Lionsgate’s somewhat vague reasoning for abandoning the sequel. Was there ever a concrete explanation eventually given to either of you as to why the studio wasn’t willing to move forward with this potentially lucrative franchise?
Todd Farmer: In the end we heard Joe Drake, the studio head at the time, didn't feel comfortable with genre films and wanted to move the company in another direction. Now is that concrete? Who knows?
Dread Central: The original My Bloody Valentine had a rather open-ended finale as well. When you first began writing the remake, did you always see your conclusion as being somewhat of an homage to the original’s ending, or were you intending to leave the door open for another installment? Can you discuss what direction MBV2 might have gone in?
Todd Farmer: If memory serves, when we started the shoot, we had a final end to the thing but changed as we went on. Patrick came up with the idea of keeping the myth alive. You'd have to ask him his reasons, but if I had to guess, I think he loved the cast and loved telling this story. It felt like a great world and wonderful characters to revisit.
And no spoilers. Hollywood is too fickle. Who knows, one day we might come back. Of course, IF we had recently spoken with anyone about the slim possibilities of relaunching the franchise... well, I obviously wouldn't be able to tell you.
Dread Central: Given that Lionsgate still seems to be in the horror business, what with their recent success with Texas Chainsaw 3D, do you feel as though there might still be a chance that audiences could see the continuing adventures of Harry Warden/Tom Hanniger? Would you and Patrick Lussier consider reteaming for the sequel if the opportunity arose?
Todd Farmer: Yes and yes. Again, we had fun with the first one. Patrick and I weren't writing partners at the time, although we more or less were. This is the movie that made us official. So yeah, we've discussed it over the years, and it's hard not to love the little miner than could.
Dread Central: Speaking of sequels, could you give us an update on Halloween 3D?
Todd Farmer: You'd have to ask team Weinstein about H3D. I haven't heard anything in well over a year. Still marvel that we wrote a script in eight days AND that it was pretty good. I'm shocked the thing hasn't leaked online after all this time, but I suppose that's because there were only a handful who saw it.
Dread Central: Can you tell us what became of the Dark Castle remake of I Saw What You Did, which Mr. Lussier had discussed in the previously mentioned interview?
Todd Farmer: I Saw What You Did. Wow, what a fun one. Three Days of the Condor in High School. Least that's what Patrick came up with and brought me in on it. What a lovely script that was. We pitched it a four or five times, were sent off to write it, and then when we did, we were told we did exactly what we'd pitched and Rona wished he'd told use before we started that he really wanted a masked killer or a ghost. Oh. Okay.
Dread Central:Are you at liberty to discuss any of your upcoming projects? IMDb lists two upcoming features that you’ve written – Heavenly Sword and The Monkey’s Paw.
Heavenly Sword was based on the video game and is all but done. A week or two from finished. I've not seen it yet. My buddy Tom Jane does a voice so it should be fun. I'm doing the Gold Coast Film Festival in April - that's Down Under - and we plan on screening it there so I'll get to see it then.
Monkey's Paw is the darkest script I've written. It's with RKO Pictures and has a stunning new director attached, but we're waiting on him to finish The Crow. I guess I should make some calls and see if that's still the case.
Dread Central: You’ve recently had a comic book released by DC Comics, titled Insurgent, which is currently on its second issue. Can you discuss its origins a bit? Considering how cinematic the book seems at times, did it initially begin life as a potential film? Might there be an Insurgent movie at some point in the future?
FJ [DeSanto, co-writer] and I started talking Insurgent a dozen years ago. We called it Sleepers back then, named after sleeper agents. It did start as a movie concept. A big, high dollar action thing. Although I love horror, action was always a great love of mine so when the opportunity arose to do something outside my normal box, I jumped at it. We started at Wildstorm and somehow survived several company shifts and earthquakes to land at DC. Sort of amazing. And all due to FJ's dogmatic, never give up, never surrender attitude. And yes. There has been some feature interest. We'll see what happens. As we both know, it only takes one "no."
Dread Central: One parting question: As a writer who has worked consistently in the genre, can you tell your fans – why horror?
Why horror? Funny. I have my normal answer which is... when I started, only New Line and Dimension really embraced horror. Everyone else looked down their noses at it. But horror was the way to get in. The budgets were low, and there wasn't big A-list competition like there is now. And that IS why. But something funny happened along the way. Not only was I pretty okay at horror, I loved writing it. Because horror is in everything we do. There is no good without bad, no light without darkness. Horror is funny and sad and thrilling. I write horror because... it's my home now.

Say no to misogyny, not nudity
The sexualisation of children and the degradation of women are topics much discussed, and with the rise of movements like the ‘No More Page 3’ campaign they have re-emerged with renewed fervour. This campaign seeks to persuade Dominic Mohan, in a rather snide and sarcastic manner, to remove the half-naked women from page three of the Sun, because ‘boobs are not news’, it is antiquated, and it objectifies and demeans women. Their petition has gained over 60,000 signatures. I feel now is the time to bring up some of my concerns.This campaign is one which easily attracts support from liberals who want to be seen as revolutionary, but it misses the most important forum for misogyny in the tabloid press, instead attacking the visible and less important. Page three is just one of the many things which contribute to the degrading rhetoric of the red top press, and it is not the Sun’s boobs which are the main culprits of the sexualisation of children and degradation of women. The general approach of the tabloid press is far more objectionable.
Boobs aren’t news, but neither is most of the content of the Sun, which Liam Mullone pointed out is “comprised entirely of hearsay, gossip and trenchant opinion.” Nor is the Sun a ‘family newspaper’; it is a light entertainment magazine in the guise of a paper, which no one can be expected to take seriously. The boobs, youthful as they are, are probably the most current, up to date part.
Page three is a fairly mild, if distasteful, distraction before you get to the real bile. The influence of newspapers is great in the realms of stereotypes and social norms, so even if the content isn’t taken seriously, their views can gradually infiltrate and take hold. It was the Daily Mail who (thankfully unsuccessfully) campaigned against the extension of the franchise in the 1920s, and the tabloid press have continued in their subtle campaign to supress and demonise young women since.
‘News in Briefs’ does far more damage than nudity – ‘look’ these women have their boobs out and have opinions on modern politics/are capable of coherent thought! What a hoot!’ This is indicative of the Sun’s irritating tendency to blur the line between objective reporting and editorial comment, and the prevalent misogyny in much of the tabloid press.
The Sun is just one of many perpetrators guilty of ‘normalising the objectification of women’ for the younger generation. It is also probably one of the tamest. Most children are now computer literate. If so, they can stumble upon a whole world of material far more objectifying and demeaning than page three. The internet is a much murkier arena of sexual corruption. Like Pan’s labyrinth, it is possible, if it takes your fancy, to be lost in smutty, degrading squalor for a long time. But it is far from mythical. This is where children could be corrupted; Page Three is not exactly a comparable beast.
One area which should also be targeted for sexualising children is our good friend the Daily Mail, in particular The Mail Online. ‘Femail’, one of the most unpleasant ‘news’ outlets on the internet, coupled with its ‘sidebar of shame’, repeatedly sexualises the young daughters of celebrities. Using phrases like ‘All grown up!’ and ‘beyond her years’, they encourage their readership to view children as adults, capable of sexual attraction and available to be viewed in such a way. It is vile. Graham Linehan called The Daily Mail ‘the Jimmy Savile of newspapers’ as a result of this phenomenon. This is a greater problem, yet there is no campaign to stop it.
Page Three is not nice. It is a damning indictment on our society that the editors feel that its inclusion will help sales. But it is also not the most damaging, demeaning or objectifying things in tabloid newspapers. The campaign has picked something obvious, well-known and visible to target, and in doing so misses what should be its target: boobs aren’t inherently bad; the general culture of sexism in these papers is.
Pick your battles, but I think this campaign has chosen the wrong one. Moral conservatism will not lead to decency or equality. The removal of page three will do nothing to change attitudes towards women; smashing the shop window does not destroy the produce. What we need is better, comprehensive sex education in schools, a campaign against the Mail Online’s paedophilic tendencies, and for the tabloid press to change their general attitude towards women. Unfortunately, the removal of page three would be a drop in the ocean.

The American Conservative on Copyright Reform

Following up on the leaked Republican Study Committee report on copyright law reform from a few months ago, The American Conservative offers this analysis on the political right’s flirtation with scaling back certain copyright protections, such as the duration of copyright and statutory damages of up to $150,000 that can be wielded like a cudgel against small-time infringers. From the piece:Today’s copyright law exhibits a pattern typical of crony capitalism—regulations restrict new entrants and creators (DJs and other remix artists in the music field, for instance) to shore up the market position of current players (record labels). But there are now powerful business interests in favor of weakening copyright as well. Opposition to the Chamber of Commerce’s traditional support for strong IP protection was one reason that companies such as Amazon, eBay, Facebook, and Google broke away to start the Internet Association, a trade group for online companies. (source)Interesting, it is more or less the libertarian element of the political right that seeks to revise some of the copyright act’s protections downward. While this would be a good start, a “less-is-more” approach wouldn’t be a comprehensive fix for copyright law; much still needs to be done to revise or replace the DMCA, a large statute that carries an importance (and legacy of seemingly contradictory court decisions) which was probably unfathomable when it was drafted, and to further enshrine the doctrine of fair use so that litigating to the rare decision on 17 U.S.C. § 107′s merits won’t require an individual’s financial ruin or the backing of special interests.

"The Takeover" centers around an African American woman discussing the issues of dating as a black woman with her Caucasian, fashion designer friend.
Directed by Shaqueta L. Smith and set in Los Angeles, this short leaves audiences with the video’s cliche theme of “Is the grass always greener on the other side?”
Over the course of the film, the two women swap lives for a single day.
This short film premiered on Valentine's Day due to its romantic genre.
It stars "Scrubs" guest star, Chrystee Pharris, Lindsey Santefort of "Castle" and Mykee Selkin of "House" and "All My Children."
Selkin plays Garrett, Santefort plays Ashley and Pharris plays Tisha.
Also in the cast, playing the role of Yoshi, is Ruben Vernier.
This film is convenient due to its Internet release; it can be watched during a break via iPhone or laptop easily.
Shaqueta has experience in screen writing as she has been apart of the writing team for “Everybody Hates Chris” and “Flavor of Love.”
After working as a college representative for Def Jam/Roc-A-Fella Records, Shequeta was able to discover her passion for writing and directing films.
Presently, her company is called Rayven Choi Films where they are in the process of making their first feature film, “Rock The Mic.” Shequeta has written one other short film titled, “The J.H. Gunn Project.”
Music in the film plays a role itself with tunes from Maroon 5’s PJ Morton, Mishal Moore, The Eskies and Sienna Spalding.
The opening scene features interesting comic book artwork to introduce the characters due to the fact that the main character is a comic book artist.
If you’re interested in getting a glimpse into the dating scene in California than this movie is a good start.

House of Cards Is the Most Popular TV Show in the World Right Now (According to IMDb)

According to the IMDb MOVIEmeter, the Netflix original series House of Cards is currently the most popular TV show in the world right now.IMDb’s MOVIEmeter is based on algorithms that determine levels of public awareness and interest. It takes into account IMDb pageviews and well as star ratings.
“IMDb Pro uses proprietary algorithms that take into account several measures of popularity for people and titles. The primary measure is who and what people are looking at on the public IMDb.com website. Other factors include Box office receipts and user quality votes on a scale of 1-10,” says IMDb.
According to IMDb, this doesn’t mean that House of Cards is the best TV show out there (although I can personally confirm that it’s undoubtedly one of the most addictive). It’s not a rank of that. What it does show is a ton of buzz and interest for the new political drama.

Earlier this week, we learned from Netflix Content Chief Ted Sarandos that House of Cards is currently the most-watched program on Netflix – both in terms of total hours streamed and total viewers.
“We’re not doing ratings, [but] we’re thrilled with the numbers,” said Sarandos. “It’s the most watched thing on Netflix in every country we operate in.”
More good news for Netflix, who spent a pretty penny on this series (and who has plenty of other original series in the works).
