stars, sex and nudity buzz : 08/08/2012

Fifty Shades of Grey Cover - P 2012Four scribes are in the running.
Before Universal and Focus anoint an actress to slip into the role of Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey, the studio will tap a writer for Hollywood’s most coveted adaptation in years.

Universal and producers Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti are now a step closer to filling that assignment after meeting to explore a quartet of writers: Karen Croner, Dan Fogelman, Veena Sud and Kelly Marcel.

Although Fogelman is the most seasoned of the group, with such credits as Bolt and Cars 2, he frequently works in the family-friendly arena -- a far cry from the S-and-M themes depicted in E.L. James’ best-seller.

Toronto-born Sud has forged darker subject matters, having developed AMC’s The Killing, based on the Danish series The Crime. Paramount also tapped Sud to write a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Suspicion.

Croner is in business with Universal/Focus on another adaptation: the Tina Fey-Paul Rudd starrer Admission, which is based on Jean Hanff Korelitz’s 2009 novel. She also adapted Anna Quindlen’s novel One True Thing, which starred Meryl Streep and Renee Zellweger.

Marcel, a British writer and actress best known for her work on the Fox TV series Terra Nova, wrote the Tom Hanks-Emma Thompson starrer Saving Mr. Banks, which goes into production next month.

Universal and Focus nabbed rights to the mega-selling Fifty Shades trilogy for $5 million in March after a heated Hollywood bidding war but have taken their time in setting a writer. The books, about a torrid love affair between a college student and a twentysomething billionaire, have sold about 40 million e-book and print copies worldwide to date.

* Surely they can't be serious with the listed screen-writers. All of 'em are more into PG-stuffs than the erotica genre. The only reason they going for Fogelman is perhaps to bait in Analeigh Tipton. Both worked together on syrupy Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011). I beginning to suspect the reason for going with these scribes is more to do with whom they worked with in sort of 2-in-1 package deal. Veena is chummy with Katie Findlay. Marcel likewise with Allison Miller. Only Croner seems to be a serious choice.

'Fifty Shades of Grey': First Look at Anastasia Steele
by Alicia Lutes

Anastasia Steele Fifty ShadesRemember last month when we took a look at the rendering sketch of Christian Grey? I believe polarizing was the name of that game. It caused quite a frenzy with fans of the E.L. James book, Fifty Shades of Grey, because most of you had an idea in your head as to who should or should not be cast as the film's leading man. While we're no casting directors here, it was fun to think about, and brought us to this point today: Anastasia Steele!

We're here again to cause another tizzy with BDSM novel-reading fans, by presenting you with a picture of the novel's main character. For those ladies who pictured the perma-lip-biting brunette, this image may cause a little...whiplash (see what we did there?!), as this lady looks decidedly un-Kristen Stewart-y (since Anastasia was technically Bella in her original Twilight fan fiction story form). Thanks to a very kind sketch artist and the descriptions from the novel, you can see (at left) the image of what our young Anastasia Steele looks like to an unbiased eye. Is it what you thought? Do you think it matches the image in your head? Well is this is truly our Miss Steele, how about we take another sit in the casting office, shall we? Here are some of the actresses we at Hollywood.com think make the grade and could have great potential...in the role.

Anastasia Steele Lookalike No. 1: Emilia Clark

Emilia Clark
We think Emilia is a strong choice for the role, though it is hard to imagine the Mother of Dragons putting up with some of the crap that Anastasia does in Fifty Shades. Still, her look is spot-on, and she clearly isn't shy about nudity--of which, we imagine, there will have to be a lot. So! We definitely think Emilia should be considered. If she can try to take over a nation, she can certainly try and take over Christian Grey's bed.
Anastasia Steele Lookalike No. 2: Mila Kunis

Mila Kunis
Alright, yes, Mila may be a bit on the older side of the spectrum, but hear us out: we think she totally has the look AND the sass to pull off an empowered version of Miss Steele. Someone who could take those moments where she's driving Christian crazy and really take control. Plus, let's be real here: Mila is totally hot and she sure did turn on a LOT of people when she "went for it" with Natalie Portman in Black Swan, so think of this casting as a nod for all the straight boys out there that will inevitably be dragged to see the film.
Anastasia Steele Lookalike No. 3: Lara Stone

Lara Stone
Does Lara Stone, supermodel extraordinaire, want to get into acting? We're not sure, but throw some brown dye on those blonde locks and we think the resemblance is striking. And what better way to make a splash on the acting scene than in what is undoubtedly going to be a huge blockbuster of a film? We can't think of anything else, really. So Lara, seriously; call your agent. This one's worth a little extra effort.
Anastasia Steele Lookalike No. 4: Leighton Meester

Leighton Meester
Leighton Meester has a bite to her, but she's also willing to play into the games her man wants to keep him around (hello Chuck Bass!). And coming off the controversial show that made her famous, this feels like a logical next step. Amp up the sex, but change up the persona, and we think Leighton's got a fighting chance of nailing the part. As long as she's willing to trade in her Louboutin's for Converses, she should be ready to go!

Anastasia Steele Lookalike No. 5: Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez
When I saw the sketch above, my immediate thought was that she looked loads like Selena Gomez. And well, if you want a way to rid yourself of a Disney/Goodie-two-shoes image, taking on the role of a submissive in an erotic novel-turned-movie is definitely a way to do it! Selena's the perfect age for the role, as well (she's nearly 21), so that and her looks also make her a good fit. But can she transition all of her innocence into the sexually adventurous Miss Steele? We wonder if Bieber will have anything to say about this!

Anastasia Steele Lookalike No. 6: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
After looking through all of these ladies, the one who bears the most striking resemblance to the sketch is Rosie here. Imagine her with brunette locks and: ta-da! Instant Steele. But does Rosie have the inner goddess it takes to bring her to life? Well she IS known mostly for being a model: and according to the books, Anastasia Steele doesn't feel very model-esque in her beauty of the way she carries herself. (No Blue Steele, har har har.) If she can pull off the clumsy and allegedly-though-you-never-see-it nerdy side of Miss Steele, we can imagine Christian Grey's long fingers giving us an oh-so-happy thumbs up on this casting choice.

Liberty Media Says It Will Spin Off Starz
The change will turn Starz into a separate, publicly traded company. That should “provide better transparency on the Starz operating business” and “optimize the Starz capital structure,” Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei says this morning. In addition, it could become easier for Liberty and Starz to use their shares for acquisitions — even as it preserves for Liberty “all our options with respect to Sirius XM and Live Nation,” companies in which it has substantial investments. Liberty investors will receive shares of Starz as a dividend. The new company will include all of Starz’ assets as well as $1.5B in debt and “an undetermined amount of cash.” The transaction, expected to close late this year, is designed to be tax free — a key consideration in deals by Liberty Chairman John Malone — but is contingent on a letter from the IRS verifying that fact. Although it will need the usual approval by anti-trust officials, it will not require a stock holder vote.
“I believe this stand-alone structure is the first step to unlocking the real potential growth opportunities for our business,” Starz CEO Chris Albrecht says. Starz had 20.7M subscribers at the end of June, up from 20.1M in March, while companion channel Encore had 34.2M, up from 33.6M. But investors are sure to have lots of questions about Starz’ financial prospects based on the results Liberty reported today in its quarterly earnings. Starz generated $100M in operating income in Q2, -10.7% vs the same period last year, on revenues of $403M, unchanged. The company says that while revenue increased at the Starz channels, it dropped in its distribution and animation businesses — and profits were hurt by rising programming costs. Like its premium channel competitors HBO and Showtime, Starz is beefing up its collection of original productions as TV audiences lose interest in seeing theatrical movies that have already been available on home video. The company’s original productions include Boss and Spartacus; it’s also working on a new series, Da Vinci’s Demons, and the second season of Magic City.

Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department racy pics under investigation

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The photos show several nearly naked firefighters. Some of them are captured in compromising positions as they stripped down for charity. But now, those captured in the images may be in trouble for a performance that looked more like a scene from the movie Magic Mike.
In one of the photos, Lt. Jenny Kabisch is shown topless except for the suspenders covering her nipples. She's wearing her bunker uniform pants and posing for the camera.

Others are shown decked out in firefighter gear in racy positions that were all caught on camera Thursday night at the Whisky River bar and restaurant on the Southside of Jacksonville.
Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson Tom Francis said Martin Senterfitt, the Director/Fire Chief of the Department, is not happy about it and now an internal investigation is underway.
"No one can represent the JFRD in or out of uniform at a public or social gathering without the permission of the Director/Fire Chief," Tom Francis said.

Francis said they're identifying who is in the photos and interviewing witnesses. No doubt Chief Mike Allen could be on that list of witnesses since he was captured in a photo at the event in street clothes. There are questions about his presence and whether he was there during the strip show watching it all unfold.
Chief Allen recently received a 20-day suspension without pay for viewing porn on his fire station office computer

Francis said participating in the charity event was not affiliated or sanctioned by the department. But he said what's also at issue is the public's trust. He said they're also looking into whether personnel at the event were on duty or off.
"No one's really ever off duty," Francis said, "In other words, as you pass an incident even if you're off duty, you have an obligation to stop and render assistance if there's another accident."
Randy Wyse, president of Jacksonville Association of Fire Fighters,  said there's still a lot of unanswered questions. He looked at a handful of the photos and questions whether all of those pictured are even with the department and where all the gear came from.
Wyse said "we'll have to determine whether or not all of that is city issued gear ... that I don't know."

He said he does want the public to know that the "First Responders Appreciation Night" was a fundraiser that was being held for a good cause -- to pay for the education of fellow firefighter Jason Bishop's three children. "It was a fundraiser for a firefighter that was killed doing side work," Wyse said.

No word yet on what type of punishment those involved could face. Francis said it will all depend on what rules, if any, were broken.

Octomom says California child services encouraged her to work in adult entertainment industry
“They’re on my side–they’re supporters,” Suleman told FoxNews.com in an interview. “It’s ironic. Once I talked with a CPS worker in regards to the adult stuff, she was like, ‘Are you really doing that?’ Well, it’s not illegal. More power to you!’ So it was almost like a green light–like, ‘Do what you need to do to take care of your family.’ They were supportive. It was funny.”
The single mother of fourteen children has starred in an erotic video, posed topless and made personal appearances at various strip clubs.
A rep for the Orange County (Calif.) Social Services Agency, which includes Children and Family Services/Child Protective Services acknowledges that parents have “a wide latitude” when it comes to suitable employment options.
“The Social Services Agency makes every effort to help children be safe in their own homes with their own families whenever possible,” Terry Lynn Fisher, Public Information Officer for OCSSA, told FoxNews.com. “The law allows a wide latitude in parenting styles and in parenting vocations. I don’t think that anybody would ever want it any other way. So as long as children remain free from harm or danger, where there’s no imminent risk of harm or danger to the child, then the Social Services Agency would not become involved.”
Fisher noted that she could not comment on specific cases or even confirm or deny that Suleman has ever been contacted by the Social Services Agency.
Michael Weston, a spokesperson for California Department of Social Services, added, “Regardless of their employment, parents have a responsibility to provide care and supervision of their children in safe environment free from abuse and neglect.”
Weston also noted that he could not comment on specific cases.
After filing for bankruptcy in April, her house in La Habra, Calif. was set to go on the auction block. So in addition to adult entertainment, Suleman has turned to the most logical place to solicit funds from random strangers: the Internet.
Suleman has set up a page on GoFundMe.com, a “do-it-yourself online fundraising service,” where she is trying to raise a down-payment for a new home. Since launching the site on July 28, Suleman has raised only $2754 -- far short of her $150,000 goal.
But despite the trickle of donations, Suleman is not deterred.
“If someone donated $1 or $5, I’m grateful. Anything is helpful,” Suleman told FoxNews.com. “Because even if I’m doing OK, with 14 kids you can never have enough help. They deserve the best, so any donation is really appreciated. I’m very, very, very grateful to the positive supporters out there because, unbeknownst to me, there are many. There are more supporters than negative people out there.”
But Suleman may need to step up her fundraising game.
“When it comes to successful campaigns, usually they get off to a very strong start, and continue to gain a following. That path is not something that we’re seeing with Nadya’s page,”  Brad Damphousse, co founder and CEO of GoFundMe.com, told FoxNews.com exclusively. “I imagine that her story probably does not resonate on the same degree as some of our more popular campaigns. For example, America’s tallest man being able to afford a pair of shoes, or the tragic shooting at a theater in Colorado. There’s really a story there; so people are likely to support those causes, share the link, and really create a successful a campaign. From what we can tell, that has not been the case with Nadya’s campaign.”
So, what could possibly drive someone to click on the “donate” button and give their hard-earned money to Suleman?
“I think that she’s doing the best that she can,” a grandmother from Torrance, Calif., who donated $40 to Suleman explained to FoxNews.com. “She has a heavy load on her shoulders. She loves her children -- she didn’t give them up for adoption. I think she’s a loving mother who is getting a bad rap. Everybody is making fun of her, and they don’t really need to. It wasn’t her fault that she ended up with that many children. She’s doing everything she can to support them and I think she has a good heart.
Superstition can also fuel donations.
“The one thing I do believe in is infinity -- the number eight,” Jesusita Chavez of Norwalk, Calif., who donated $8 to Suleman, explained to FOXNews.com. “She is working hard at finding a home for her kids. I like that about her -- she’s not giving up.”
But in case there are a dearth of kind-hearted grandmothers and fans of the number eight, Suleman has a plan B: Having “generous” men bid on the privilege of taking her out on a “date.”
“I have yet to go on this date, but I know it’s going to happen,” Suleman said of her profile on WhatsYourPrice.com, where bidding on a “date” with her reportedly opened at $500. “There’s been a lot of interest, but I don’t talk about it and I don’t talk about the prices. But it’s really a great opportunity to meet and greet and talk to people. In regards to ‘real’ dating, you never know! That was never my intention, but life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans. Finding Mr. Right is not a priority, but I’m definitely trying to generate revenue for my family. If I leave them for five minutes, I better be making money for them, because the only time I’m away from them is when I’m making money. That’s basically what it’s come down to.”

The rise of porn in India
Beginning to hit the mainstream.

Bollywood films are hardly known for their explicit sex scenes. Although modern films are getting more suggestive, the classic trope is a couple about to kiss, before the camera cuts away to show a lotus flowering or a full moon.

This coyness is in keeping with India’s censorious attitude to sexuality. It is a conservative society where, in general, both men and women must wear modest clothing, and sex or relationships before marriage are prohibited. Bollywood actor Randeep Hooda described it as a “sexually repressed society” after the reaction to sex scenes in one of his films.

While images depicting sexual intercourse may be as old as civilisation (think cave paintings and the Kama Sutra), the modern porn industry with its financial interests, flashy stars, and increasingly extreme scenes, is certainly not something you would associate with India. But the country does have a long history of home grown porn, and thanks to the internet, it is beginning to hit the mainstream.

In February, three ministers in the state of Karnataka were forced to resign after they were caught watching porn on a mobile phone in the precincts of the Legislative Assembly. Although they denied it, with one claiming they were watching the rape of a girl at a “rave party” to prepare for an assembly discussion about the dangers of such parties, the incident caused widespread outrage. It also prompted a mainstream discussion of pornography, which despite its popular appeal, is frequently swept under the carpet.

In India, it is legal to access pornographic material privately, but illegal to distribute or produce it. Because of this, the production of so-called “blue films” – generally softcore – is not openly discussed. That has not stopped the industry, traditionally based in southern states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala where censorship is more relaxed, from being worth an estimated one billion dollars. It is thought that the slang “blue film” originates from the use of blue sets and lighting to conceal the identities of the actors and ensure that they are safeguarded from social stigma. Indeed, public opinion about porn stars is very negative: they tend to be viewed as sex workers rather than actors, a serious slur in a culture which attaches such shame to sexuality.

However, there are signs that these attitudes may be changing. In 2011, Canadian-born Indian porn star Sunny Leone appeared on Bigg Boss, the equivalent to Big Brother. At that point, she’d been involved in the adult industry – including hardcore porn – for ten years. She initially refused to divulge her past, telling a housemate that she was a model and TV star in America. But outside, it was common knowledge. She gained 8,000 new followers on Twitter in two days, and complaints were lodged that the channel was promoting pornography by allowing her to appear. Leone has certainly benefitted financially: she says 80 per cent of her web traffic and 60 per cent of her "high six figures" revenue now comes from India. She has also defied expectations by making the transition to mainstream stardom. She has already appeared (with her clothes on) in a Bollywood film, with more in the pipeline.

While there are signs that women in the adult industry are increasingly willing to talk about what they do, there is, for the most part, a big stigma attached. Polite society in the west may frown on the adult industry but it is nothing on the total social exclusion and inability to live life that goes with dishonour or immorality in India. Leone did not grow up in India, instead arriving from America, already a big star. However, some truly home grown porn stars are emerging. Delhi-born Anjali Kara is a hardcore porn actress, now primarily based in Bangkok, who has spoken openly about her profession. In an interview, she said she will not return to India permanently: “Indians do not and will never understand what I am doing. In their eyes I am a prostitute and I should be ashamed of myself”. Although she said she is proud of what she does, she stressed that it is just acting: “I don’t drink, nor smoke and do not sleep around in my personal life. For me, sex is acting.” She added that “no Indian man will be able to accept me”. Finding a husband is of paramount importance in this society; it is notable that Kara has essentially chosen to exile herself from the country of her birth. She insists that she is happy with her choice, but it is not a choice that is compatible with living a happy life in India.

The illegality of making porn means that it is necessarily shrouded in secrecy. As with other hidden industries, it is sometimes funded by “black money” (like Bollywood before it) and tax evasion is rife. In certain areas, there are indeed close ties to prostitution. But the internet is changing the way that porn is consumed in India, bringing it to a mass market and making it more affordable and acceptable. Although internet searches are required by government to censor pornographic results, these blocks are easily circumvented by a tech-savvy populace.

According to India Today, Google Trends shows that searches for the word “porn” doubled between 2010 and 2012. And there is other evidence of its growing appeal too:
One out of five mobile users in India wants adult content on his 3G-enabled phone, according to an 2011 IMRB Survey. Over 47 per cent students discuss porn every day, says a public school survey by Max Hospital in Delhi. Porn tops the list of cyber crimes in India, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.
Increased web connectivity has had the same impact on porn as it has in the west – a proliferation of amateur videos. While this is still a relatively new phenomenon in India, it is inevitably hitting profits in the blue film industry. Yet the potential for profit amongst such a huge population is huge - as some American porn companies recognised, when they urged the Indian government to change the law to allow them to open up offices there. Perhaps unsurprisingly, there has been no response.

After the three Karnataka ministers resigned, there was much hand-wringing about the negative impact of internet porn on society, but also some accusations that those willing to consume porn themselves but condemn it in other people were hypocritical. That conflicted attitude is evident in the words of Kara: she says she loves what she does but equally, cannot settle in the country where she is famous and has been disowned by her family.

Leone takes credit for the mainstreamising of porn, saying: "My presence on Bigg Boss has empowered a lot of people to be open about their sexuality.” She may have jumped the gun: this is clearly still a process in motion, and there is a debate to be had about whether porn is the best model for sexual liberation at all. Regardless of your views on that, it is clear that the Indian porn industry is resilient, spreading, and will not be stamped out by the censorship laws it is well used to resisting.

How bad do celebrities want stardom?
Source: Adeyemi Adebayo Victor-GhanaWeb

Baby Blanche ActressOne popular song has a segment of its lines as, ‘how much do you want it the fame, the money and the ice?’, and permit me to use this lines as we go down together in resolving this menace that is eating deep like cankerworm into the hearts of our movie directors and budding acts - that’s NUDITY for stardom!

Well, it is an undeniable fact that nudity now is watched on our televisions week in, week out. Seduction isn’t a faraway art that most of our budding acts apply to get roles in movies, and this saddens my heart. Let me chip in this, that a woman is first and foremost valuable because she is made in God’s image; and her unfading beauty comes from a gentle and quiet spirit; so the question arises, why must these budding acts evoke destruction?

I have spoken a lot, I have fought, and I guess my clarion call is falling on blurred ears. I am not writing this piece to either create a stunt for whoever is sitting in his or her Jacuzzi, probably relaxing and counting his blessings as a director, either am I going to lambaste and lampoon acts which seem obnoxious, put up by any budding star in the making who cannot protect his or her ego in this industry; pardon me for my grammar, I no be Hon. Patrick Obahiagbong.

I will not hide my disgust feelings at what has been making news across Ghana in the past few days. I may be lashed over names calling, but who cares, se no be me get my mouth to talk? If these acts were discreet I wouldn’t have the guts to bitterly talk about them. Pardon me to open an old can of worm, whilst I make this clear and brief as possible, there was a point when it was all about Raquel and her ‘free show’, which came, saw and did it conquer? Then Angela Tabiri, who exposed everything gbagaaam, shifting blames on her boyfriend, then all sorts of flimsy stories crept out.

Now, let me touch on the recent ‘Socrate Sarfo’s Syndrome’, which he builds publicity through nudity. Oga me which levels na? Must you stoop so low in punching your artistic abilities via ridiculing the integrity of these budding acts? I have seen the trailer of your new piece, AMEN, and then I got to see some of your still photographs, permit me to ask you this again, Oga me which levels na?

If I am clear on this, Socrate Sarfo allegedly went to the extent of wanting to bribe a journalist from making the nude photographs public, se na wo soro die amansan be kan? Then I ask again, ‘how much do you want it the fame, the money and the ice?’ For how much did George Berthou and Baby Blanche had to go ‘gaga’ on the set on AMEN? How much do you intend to gain from this blasphemy?

Our celebrities, especially the female once in Ghana, Africa and the world, must know that the vision of bringing back the vision of womanhood is a glorious one. In a world that frowns on femininity, that minimizes motherhood, and that belittles the beauty of being a true lady, then the ball is in your court to uphold the purity, contentment enthusiasm and heritage of bliss.

And to Socrate Sarfo, how much do you want the fame, the money and the ice? At what price and sacrifice would you pay the cost to be the boss of luring ‘naïve’ actors and actresses to stardom?

Attempted blackmail of participants in erotic activities on the rise
Love hotel romps, sex-toy purchases, and underwear theft are among the targets
by Amy Takahashi [On August 8, 2012]
In July, a woman in her 20s and a man a few decades her senior exited a love hotel in Yokohama. Unbeknownst to either party was video footage being taken by a 44-year-old male office worker.

“This is prostitution,” wrote the office worker in a message to the woman after he followed her home to Tokyo and obtained her email address. “I’ll expose the whole thing to your family if you don’t pay me 500,000 yen.”

The office worker, Wataru Aoki, was eventually arrested, and Nikkan Gendai (Aug. 7) sees the incident as evidence of the increase in attempted extortion of participants in indecent endeavours.

In Nagoya, a 64-year-old male was arrested for threatening a man as he decamped from a love hotel. “I’ve got video showing evidence of your affair,” he threatened. “Give me 450,000 yen for the film.”

The National Consumer Affairs Center of Japan is seeing a surge in claims filed for fraud. Between August of 2011 and January of this year the office received a total of four complaints. Between February and March, the figure jumped to 334.

Fuzoku journalist Yukio Murakami says that scams involving sex are common, including the “office lady (OL) tail.”

“After an OL resigns from her office, she’ll be followed to she if she takes up part-time work at a sex club,” says Murakami, a specialist in such matters. “If discovered, she’ll be asked for her body or cash in exchange for keeping the information under wraps.”

The National Consumer Affairs Center of Japan reports of another incident in which a victim was threatened with the leak of information regarding the purchase of improperly censored porn DVDs.

Murakami says that video showing the theft of women’s underwear from a balcony might bring in between 300,000 and one million yen to an extortionist. Offering to delete a name from a list of purchasers of sex toys — often by unmarried career women — could be worth 40,000 yen.

A fake pregnancy is another method. “The woman will say it is fine for her partner to finish inside her during sex,” Murakami says. “But then he’ll get a threatening call from an unknown guy claiming to be the woman’s boyfriend who says his girl is pregnant.”

The tone will oftentimes be polite, the writer says of the typical threats: “It might continue with something like ‘May we receive 100,000 yen for the necessary abortion?’” (A.T.)

‘Nampa AV’ porn productions falling on hard times
Decline linked to an amendment to a public nuisance ordinance that prohibits guys from picking up girls in the streets
by Amy Takahashi [On July 25, 2012]

In the world of adult video (AV), films featuring amateur actresses have always proved to be popular. Yet, reports Weekly Playboy (Aug. 6), titles in the genre known as “nampa AV,” in which amateur girls are picked up in public and subsequently coerced into erotic activities, are on the verge of extinction.

An employee at a popular DVD rental shop explains that films in the venerable “4-Hour Compilation” series are still routinely sold. “But now,” the employee says, “new arrivals each month have fallen off. It seems production of such titles has dwindled.”

A public relations representative from AV producer Hot Entertainment says that the company releases about four new titles each month. “The number of companies specializing in this genre numbers only three. So production throughout the industry is way down.”

Magazine editor Masahiko Matsuzawa says that the reason for the drop off in nampa productions lies in an amendment to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s public nuisance ordinance in 2008. “Guys are prohibited from scouting and picking up girls on the streets,” the editor says. “In short, AV production companies cannot have staff members out in public and calling out to girls. Enforcement in the Shibuya and Shinjuku areas is very strict, and the number of AV production companies giving up is huge.”

Director and actor Hiroshi Shimabukuro, who has 20 years of experience in the industry, agrees with this assessment. “Shibuya is very difficult,” says Shimabukuro. “A third party might see a girl enter a car and file a report. I’ve been there on days when 10 patrol cars were out in the streets.”

The veteran assures that it is necessary that the girls be tended to carefully inside vehicles by the production staff members to remove any suspicions they may have about the circumstances.

Strengthened nuisance laws, however, are not the only reason for the decline. AV production companies are also becoming increasingly hesitant due to threats of litigation. “Guys will call out to girls in the street by saying they resemble such-and-such actress,” says Shimabukuro. “Because there is concern that the agency of the actress will file a claim, such activities are now out.”

Similar worries exist for any background music playing in the street. “Since the Japan Association of Music Enterprises could cause trouble, locations where no music is playing are targeted. But trucks, cars, and stores throughout town blaring advertising jingles are unavoidable so this becomes a very sensitive issue.” (A.T.)

Suicide of Yellow Cab president a reflection of tough times in talent biz
Popularity of younger groups like AKB48 forcing gals into AV and hostessing
by Kenji Nakano [On July 3, 2012]

The suicide last week of the president of the Yellow Cab talent agency is a sign of the turbulent times facing the gravure industry, reports Yukan Fuji (June 30).

Takanori Obenata, 58, was found hanged the afternoon of June 28 at the company’s offices in the Minami Aoyama district of Minato Ward. He discovered hanging from a necktie and vinyl cord in an office toilet by a staff member at approximately 3:20 p.m. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Financial trouble could have been a factor. “He started having money problems about two years ago,” says an acquaintance. “He accumulated a debt of five hundred million yen.”

Yellow Cab, whose company is known for its busty gravure, or pin-up, idols and models, was founded in 1980 and rose to prominence over the next two decades. Its current roster includes such top-name models as Eiko Koike and Eriko Sato. Obenata took over as president in 2006.

Yukan Fuji says that the gravure business is struggling as the emergence of younger idol groups is having a large impact. “In the battle for sales inside the pages of manga books, groups like AKB48, whose members sing and appear in bikinis, are winning out for jobs,” says an employee in the entertainment industry. “And sponsors are breaking off ties due the economic downturn. Overall, there is a general subsidence in the industry.”

As a result, there are many down-and-out idols. “In Roppongi and Nishi Azabu,” says the aforementioned employee of two nightlife areas of Tokyo, “struggling models and entertainers are taking up work as bar hostesses. Some of them are even taking up jobs at sex clubs.”

Anonymity is generally guaranteed at these operations. However, leaks do occur.

“The ex-wife of a certain male celebrity had just returned to show business when she enrolled in a deri heru (out-call sex) operation in the Kanto area,” says a different industry employee. “One customer later started blabbing on the Internet, and that’s how the word got out.”

In metropolitan areas, adult video (AV) production companies and sex clubs are included in the operations of some entertainment agencies. “Some companies will put entertainers and gravure idols to work in sex clubs or AV flicks once they reach their ‘expiration date,’” says the aforementioned industry insider. Every bit a Malaysian
by Nicholas Cheng

Being an all-Malaysian girl, the 19-year-old Penangite is upset that her national heritage was questioned in an article in the United States-based magazine International Business Times (IBTimes) about the country's Miss Universe contestant being "too white".

Malaysians were outraged and Miss Malaysia Universe Organisation (Mumo) national director Andrea Fonseka lashed out at the publisher and its July 14 article, saying it was not only unfair but reflected their ignorance.

"Yes, we are predominantly Malay, Chinese and Indian. But there are also other ethnic groups. As such, don't pass any judgement on cultures and nationalities that you're unfamiliar with," she was quoted as saying in a Bernama report that was carried by all major media groups.

IBTimes had said Leggett, with her hazel eyes, fair skin and long dark hair, could easily pass for a citizen of the Euro zone.
Her fluent English is a mix of dialects it sounds a bit like the oft-stereotyped American valley girl accent, with hints of British.

Leggett said: "I was frankly offended with the article because it spoils the good reputation of the pageant that is judged fairly, not by the colour of a contestant's skin.
"I may not look like the average Malaysian but I am very much local. Why am I being picked on for looking a certain way?"

Beauty with a pan-Asian look Chloe Chen shared Legget's sentiments. The Miss World Malaysia 2011 winner, born of a Chinese Malaysian father and a French mother said: "I have never felt any lesser a Malaysian than my friends and acquaintances because I am a born and bred local.
She said it was unfair of IBTimes to single out the beauty queens of Malaysia as not being representatives of its people.
"When I competed in the Miss World pageant, there were African countries represented by white women. Canada was represented by a Chinese beauty queen.
"If it wasn't an issue for other countries to have a minority representing them, why should it be a problem for multi-racial Malaysia?" asked Chen, who lists rendang and lemang among her favourite snacks.
Her predecessor, 2010 title holder Nadia Heng said competence and confidence were key factors in the competition.
"At the end of the day, winners are chosen for their calibre and the way they carry themselves," said Heng, whose lineage is a mix of Chinese Malaysian and English.

* Just noticed something. Eurasian girls tends to have longish pointy face. But Kimmy got the body and height to work in fashion modeling. From my experience working in the region, Miss Leggett like previous beauty queens will :
[1] become a fashion model/designer.
[2] relocates to a different country soon after the Miss Universe pageant.
[3] becomes an actor/singer. Few local flicks. Stage work. Failed albums.
Ends up doing either option [4] or [5] or [6].
[4] marries an Aussie douche.
[5] converts to Islam and marries a much older and wealthy local asshole.
[6] ties the knot with geeky Malaysian-Chinese dude.
